A Jacob's Ladder is probably the easiest, simplest high voltage display. It can also be extremely dangerous.
There is always at least one in any cinematic mad science lab. I have seen some sets with several! Typically, these are naked, with nothing to prevent the unwary from touching an electrode.
Nevertheless, it's a high impact build anyone can do. Acquiring the transformer is the hardest part.
