This is about the time I decide on my theme - it takes about 6 months for me to narrow choices and finalize. I didn't want to do any major builds this year since we might move, so a lot of light play and ambiance. List of scenes include:
- hooded figures around an ember pit
- cocooned figures hanging from tree with large jumping spider prop, this is the only animated prop this year.
- 2 window projections
- 1 figure projection
- blacklight face wall/ webbing in ...

Clowns!


They are soooooo scary, right?
Well, to some they are. Certainly to a lot of children, their first encounter with a clown can be disturbing with the bright colors and garish behavior. That fear might carry on into adulthood.

The thing is, as our own AZ Haunter Jud (an actual clown) has observed, there is no need for the "crazed clown" masks resembling the characters from Killer Klowns from Outer Space. When ...

This week I wanted to share with you a fascinating sequence using light and shadow from Carl Theodore Dreyer's 1932 horror movie Vampyr.


The two parts I think are most effective are the man climbing the ladder (0:22) and then sitting on guard duty (1:14). It's also pretty cool the way the same shadow apparently climbs through the window (0:11).

In my experience, building props is a lonely exercise. Only I can see the images in my head, and often, no one could really help me if they wanted to. In any event, the fam is busy doing other things. So, while I'm making things, sometimes I'm listening to something on netflix or somesuch. Most of the time, though, I am listening to podcasts. They are typically made to be heard rather than seen, so nothing is lost while I am painting or sanding. Or sanding. Or sanding...
